Worst Camping Trip Ever in the Northeast Kingdom: Part 1

Before the Worst Camping Trip Ever, my family used to go camping all the time.  We'd been all over New England, and really loved it.  I remember how much fun I had going with my family and exploring woods, lakes and streams.

One year we decided that we would go to the Northeast Kingdom in Vermont.  I only remember two things from the first day or so—my mother had bought us automatic water guns, and our dog went swimming, of his own volition, for the first time ever.

The weirdness began when our dog, Fenway, who had never been much of a digger, started excavating pit after pit, all over the campsite.  These were not small holes, the were in fact so big that once a hole was dug, Fenway would climb into it and you would not be able to see him at all.

Perhaps Fenway knew that we were on our way to the worst camping trip ever.  Not long after we arrived, the rain began to fall.  New England summers can be rainy, and my father insisted that the rain would pass.  So we waited.

We waited.

And we waited.

We were stuck in a 6-person tent, with two adults, two children and a soaking wet, smelly dog.  Worst Camping Trip Ever? Not yet.  No, there was plenty more to come.

In an attempt to salvage our vacation, my parents took us up to Canada.  Nobody felt like trying to start a fire to cook on while we were in an unending downpour.  My sister and I spent the whole breakfast quarrelling with each other.  As soon as we finished eating we were out of the restaurant and exploring the town.  It was at least dry in Canada, and we enjoyed walking and looking around, and before long it was lunchtime.

We'd enjoyed the breakfast place, and decided to go back.  Something seemed wrong.  The waitstaff kept looking over at us, talking among themselves, looking at us some more.

About halfway through our meal, our waitress came up to us and asked, "Do you realize that you left this morning without paying the bill?"  My parents were mortified.  We paid for both meals, and I think that my parents were ready to hit the road right away.

Our worst camping trip ever was far from over, though, and soon we'd be having our 2nd major embarrassing moment in Canada.  This time with customs...
