Sail Amsterdam

By D. Chazan

If you're looking for an interesting summer event, there's one that takes place only every five years in Amsterdam, The Netherlands - and if you can find your way to getting over there this coming summer (specifically August 19-23, 2010), you'll be right on time for the eighth one. This is what is known as "Sail Amsterdam" and is a display of ships of all shape and kind - especially antique tall ones - from all over the world, gathering in Amsterdam. We witnessed this back in 2000 and it is incredible how startlingly handsome and majestic these ships are. They say that when the river is completely full at the height of the festivities, you could theoretically walk across the width of the river at its widest point and never come in contact with the water, by going from boat to boat! In addition to the floating exhibit, the whole area of the city is filled with food and gift stands as well as both planned and impromptu concerts and other shows (such as mimes and puppets). Highlights of the sea-faring festivities include several types of races, sailing lessons for children and fireworks over the water in the evenings. Despite the crowds, it is huge fun, and all those tall ships are a site to see - some of which are restored originals from hundreds of years ago. Make sure you get up close, since they're all in pristine condition, making them both beautifully designed as well as nautically sound.
