Fall Vacation Ideas: Just because the days are getting shorter doesn't mean you have to stop having fun

When you're trying to come up with unique fall vacation ideas, it can be a challenge.  Fall vacations always seem to focus on pumpkins, apple-picking and hay rides or Halloween and Thanksgiving flavored kitsch.  Don't despair! The fall is one of the best times of year to travel.  It's an off-peak time in many parts of the world, with the major tourist season over and as a result places are less crowded, and often less expensive.  Furthermore, many cultures and religions celebrate their own harvest-related holidays that are full of local flavor and are often below the radar of summer tourists.  These fall vacation ideas are sure to give you something better to do than hibernate as winter approaches.
  • Sukkot in Israel, the autumn harvest festival when it seems the entire country has become a campground. Even the fast-food restaurants have special huts for people to sit and eat in
  • Celebrate Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, in Trinidad and Tobago. The large Indian population fills their homes with candles and light in order to be blessed for prosperity. Of course, all of it is done with a special Caribbean flair!
  • Kona Coffee Festival -- two weeks of coffee, food, hawaiian culture and fun in the sun.
  • Celebrate the Kerala Harvest festival of Onam -- Every year, sometime in August or September, enjoy snake boat races, amazing food and traditional song and dance
  • Score some good craic in Ennis, Ireland!  Ennis, in Co. Claire, is one of the major centers of traditional Irish music.  In the fall, the days are still comfortable enough to enjoy the amazing scenery in the area, but when the evening chill begins so does the real fun, with nightly seisiuns of local musicians playing in different pubs.
