Adventures in Rhodes: Cheap Rhodes Holiday

By Terrence Aym

Why take a cheap Rhodes holiday? It is an island of mythical proportions, that rises from the Mediterranean like a bedazzling green jewel. This island experience is like no other in the Mediterranean. And tucked away on Rhodes our destination: the Byzantine village of Lindos with arguably one of the finest bays in the world.

As the Olympus jet banked for a landing my wife and I passed over the harbor where the fabled giant the Colossus of Rhodes once stood. The towering statue of the god Helios welcomed all to the island. Standing only for fifty-six years before an earthquake destroyed it in 226 BCE, the Colossus of Rhodes nevertheless earned the distinction of being one of the original Seven Wonders of the World.

As we entered the outskirts of Rhodes Town an Arab offered us rides on camels. We rode the camels several miles around the outskirts of the town to a bus depot, briefly stopping at medieval towers. A short time later we visited the spectacular Palace of the Grand Masters, once a refuge for the Knights of Templar. Finally, before beginning the long trek across the island we stopped to admire the magical pool of Kallithea - the pool of the gods.

Amazing sights rich in history, beauty and culture line the roads to Lindos.  This is an ideal place to visit on a cheap Rhodes holiday.

Located on the opposite side of the island from Rhodes Town, Lindos is an old world village within footsteps of the most beautiful bay in the Mediterranean. Adventurers from all over the world zero in on Lindos each year seeking some
of the island's many thrills such as snorkeling or scuba diving amongst the Aegean coral beds, riding braying donkeys up the torturous trails to the massive acropolis that overlooks the village, sunbathing au naturel on the pristine beaches, or winding and twisting through the myriad mazes that pass for streets.

Lindos is dotted with tiny Byzantine chapels and mosaic-tiled mosques. While the architecture is both familiar and otherworldly, the food is a tasty mixture of Greek and Mediterranean staples.

Once settled in Lindos within one of the many cool, whitewashed villas that snake along the coastline, we planned our special outing to the ethereal Valley of the Butterflies - one of the most fascinating places in Europe. During the months of May through September the butterflies come by the millions, they mate and lay eggs. When they are airborne they resemble animated rainbows flitting across the azure skies.

Truly Rhodes - and Lindos in particular - will offer you a summer vacation you'll never forget. Each moment you spend under the island's magical spell will be a moment that lasts you a lifetime.
